CANON G10 WITH uw CASE

Postby D7avid on Wed Oct 21, 2009 6:59 pm

A question for you UW shooters out there.I recently was on a trip and saw some pics from someone using a canon G10 with the UW case. Results were impressive despite slightly turbid water and using the onboard flash. As a fairly serious snorkler but probaby not
scuba anymore ,I would like a sharp shooting outfit with decent video for around the 800 bucks I think these cost.Any suggestions would be helpful.

The G10 and the Canon WPDC28 case is the setup I'm putting together for my wife for our next trip (whenever that happens), for lighting, I plan on using 2 Suprema 44LED dive lights mounted on arms on either side of the camera. The chance of too much backscatter due to using the onboard strobe is too high for my tastes. Inon I believe has a dome port that fits on the Canon housing so that the full 28mm FOV is retained. Currently, the flat port of the Canon will reduce the FOV to that of a 35mm lens, not wide enough. Also, there is the Magic Filter for strobe free use.

I will plan on using the 5Dmk2 or 7D in an Aquatica housing for my UW Digital photo needs.

Thanks Stu,
So I guess you're onboard with the G10 combo.

I have used that camera for some shallow water snorkeling. I set the WB to the UW setting and the colors came out beautiful. For me, it is a great system for shallow water and beach and kayaking situations. Serious divers would want wider angle and a real flash system.

I have also taken that camera on two great vacations where I left my SLR at home. I wanted to travel light and the G10, remote switch, small tripod, and polarizer produced many outstanding photos. I used it to produce a great night shot using HDR that does not look like HDR. I made stunning 16x20 gallery wrap image of my family in a field of sunflowers that is fantastic. And my family are harsh critics. ;o)

Hey, Stu,

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the G10. My wife's PT-030 housing for her Oly SP 350 developed an unrepairable crack and I am looking for something else. This is helpful. Did the Philippines trip in December fall through?

Hi Mark

Yeah, it did, looking at PI fall of next year, whale sharks and the usual macro! ;-)

Canon just came out with a G11 model with improved noise reduction at higher ISO. You might want to look into it.
